Knowledge Bowl

The 5th and 6th graders put in many hours practicing and preparing for the knowledge bowl season. The season concluded this week with an in-house tournament in which a 5th grade team competed against a 6th grade team. It was a close race, but in the end, the 6th graders prevailed.

Thank you to all of you for your dedication and commitment to helping others resolve conflicts during the morning and lunch recess time this school year. Your positive attitude each day was greatly appreciated as well as your willingness to help out with other things as needed.

2013 Young Author/Young Artist Conference

13 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 attended the Young Authors/Young Artists Conference at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN. This conference is a celebration of student writing and creative expression. Students listened to author Katie McKy speak about writing and how it begins with witnessing and wondering. Throughout the day the students learned how to write songs, create origami, draw characters, write stories and tell stories from published writers, illustrators and artists.

Krypto Challenge 2013
Krypto is a math game that reinforces basic math skills. Can be played with a regular deck of cards (just remove the jack, queen, king)
- The rules of Krypto are simple. Deal five cards to each player.
- Turn over the top card from the remaining cards to be the object card. Be the first one to arrive at the number on the object card by adding, subtracting, multiplying and/or dividing each number card once and only once.

The winner of this year's spelling bee was 7th grader Hanna Zelany, with Kim Whaley placing second. Pine City Elementary's Sully Lucht placed 3rd in the District Spelling Bee and Logan Vinaja placed 4th. Congratulations to all the contestants!
PINE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT SPELLING BEE
The 21st Annual District Spelling be will be help in the Pine City Elementary School Auditorium on Tuesday, February 5th at 3:45 pm. The bee is comprised of 5th grade through 8th grade students from Pine City Public Schools.
The winner of the district spelling bee will go on to compete in the Central Minnesota Regional Bee to be held Thursday, February 21, 2013.

2013 GEOGRAPHIC BEE WINNER

Alex Wimmer is the 2013 Pine City Elementary School winner of the 6th Grade National Geographic Bee. Alex will go on to take the state qualifying test. Alex is one step closer to winning a $25,000 college scholarship. This year's Bee is sponsored by Google.
The kickoff for this year's bee was the week of December 10th with all the 6th grade students participating in Round I. The next round involved the top 25 students. After the completion of Round II, we were down to the top 10 students. At the end of Round III, we had a three way tie for first place, Alex Wimmer, Lukas Kemen and Logan Hable. Alex Wimmer emerged as the winner. Congratulations to all the students.!
Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the exciting GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses 10 new questions a day.

A Baker's Dozen

Ten second grade students presented, "A Baker's Dozen; A St. Nicholas Tale" to the second grade reading classes. The students worked hard for three weeks practicing their lines, learning new vocabulary and creating props for the skit.
